The Society was founded in 1997 by members of the Rotary Club who recognised the need for a group dealing with family history in this part of the country.
We have regular monthly meetings at which there is usually a speaker, followed by the chance to do some research with the help of our more experienced members. We have occasional public open days – there was one on Saturday 18th February 2006 in the Church halls – at which we shall show what we do and hope to kindle the interest of some new members.
Each year we have ‘graveyarding’ sessions, where we copy and index the Memorial Inscriptions of the gravestones in a churchyard or cemetery, producing a booklet for sale which, as well as being most helpful to family history researchers, is also a useful means of raising funds for the society, in order that we may purchase more research resources. Churchyards and cemeteries which have been favoured with our attention so far are Alloway, Ballantrae, Colmonell, Patna, Dalmellington Old and New Cemeteries, Girvan Doune and Maybole.
Our meetings are held on the third Thursday of each month in Alloway Church Small Hall, beginning at 7.45 pm. All are made welcome!
