The Cambusdoon Cross was installed in the chancel of Alloway Church and was formally unveiled on Sunday 13th January 2008 by Cllr. Margaret Toner and Ms. Elizabeth Kwasnik, Museums and Galleries Officer, S. Ayrshire Council.
The Cross has been kindly loaned to the Church by South Ayrshire Council for a period of five years and is one of the very few monuments in the area which links Alloway to the early Christian Church.
James Galloway, a pupil of Cambusdoon School, discovered the Cross in 1928 in a small coppice within the grounds of Cambusdoon and when the dead leaves and sticks were cleared away, the stone was seen to bear interesting markings. It is thought to have been a standing stone which had been “Christianised” sometime about the ninth century with the addition of the Cross
Those in the picture are (L to R) Ms. Elizabeth Kwasnik, Rev. Neil McNaught, Cllr. Margaret Toner, Mr. Eric Ness (Session Clerk) and Mr. John Skilling (Property Convener).
