“And near the thorn, aboon the well,

Whare Mungo’s mither hang’d hersel!’

The well existed in Robert Burns’ day and it is said that St Mungo travelled in this area, possibly drinking from the well, but the allusion in Burns’ poem ‘Tam o’Shanter’ to Mungo’s mother hanging herself is pure fiction on the poet’s part.

 

Mungo’s well can be clearly seen through the garden railings immediately on leaving the tunnel. (Total distance about 500yds of tarmac all the way). Alloway Burns Club have put up a sign on the railings to draw attention to the well.
